Table 1 : Requirements in this guidance 1.4 Key Recommended practice or approach, not mandatory to comply with the Act or these guidelines Legal requirement that has to be complied with See Section 4: Training and certification for more information on certificates of competence. The HSE Regulations define three different types of scaffolding: Basic, Advanced and Suspended. NZQA registered unit standards may assist in fulfilling the qualification requirement. This may be acquired through training, qualification, experience, or a combination of these. ‘Competent’ means someone has the appropriate knowledge and skills to carry out a particular task. 1.3 Key terms Scaffolder/certified scaffolderįor the purposes of these guidelines, a scaffolder or certified scaffolder is someone who holds a current certificate of competence appropriate to the type of scaffold that is being erected, used, maintained, repaired, or dismantled. They have formerly also been called best practice guidelines. Good practice guidelines may sometimes be cited by WorkSafe as an expected standard of practice if poor practice is being alleged. However, if a duty holder deviates from good practice they should have well thought out reasons for this and be able to provide appropriate evidence. Good practice guidelines give advice – they are not legally binding. When deciding how to do a job safely, make sure to check any industry-specific guidance.Ī list of standards and guidelines relating to scaffolding, scaffold components, and other industry guidance that could be relevant to a scaffolding site can be found in Appendix C: Further information. To purchase Standards, go to the Standards New Zealand website: (external link) or email: industries have guidelines that deal with specific problems faced in their working environments, such as the electricity sector or plant and machinery hire. In particular, duty holders should use the joint Australian and New Zealand Standard 1576 series as the benchmark for designing, manufacturing, and working safely with scaffolding. Some requirements and recommendations in the guidelines are based on a benchmark set by New Zealand and/or International Standards. They also explain the relevant legal requirements of HSWA and the HSE Regulations. These guidelines represent the current state of knowledge (the best available at the time of publication) on the safe design, use and maintenance of scaffolding in New Zealand. The guidelines also include structures that may not be strictly classed as scaffolding under the legal description, but which are constructed using standard scaffold components (eg temporary grandstand and roof edge protection). It includes any equipment or item used in connection with the construction, erection, dismantling or use of scaffolding. Scaffolding is defined in the HSE Regulations (see Appendix A). For more information on the specific regulations relating to scaffolding work, see Appendix A: Scaffolding regulations. These guidelines are for persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs), workers, upstream PCBUs (see Section 2, Roles and responsibilities), and other people involved in scaffolding work.Īll work involving scaffolding must comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) and all relevant regulations, including the Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995 (HSE Regulations) and the Health and Safety at Work (General Risk and Workplace Management) Regulations 2016 (GRWM Regulations). Ensure scaffolding is fit for purpose and meets the needs of all users.Duties under the Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995 still apply.Duty holders have responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.They also provide guidance on how to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, and the Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995. These guidelines offer advice for keeping workers safe when erecting, dismantling and working on scaffolding. It might appear relatively straight forward during a sunny Sunday morning shift, but when the sun goes down and the rain starts pouring, things soon get much trickier with stops and routes far more difficult to judge. Missed or inaccurate stops will cost you come the end of the shift, while any damage to your bus also comes out of your pay packet. Again, getting from point A to point B isn’t all that tricky, but doing so without receiving the kind of penalties that will hit your bank balance is a different story altogether. From opening the doors, switching on the windscreen wipers, managing your lights and taking control of the ticket machine, every element of the actual job is present and accounted for….well, beyond the risk of drunken violence and verbal abuse I suppose.ĭespite all these additional requirements though, it’s still the actual driving that provides the primary challenge. The amount of action you are actually required to take while out on the shift is optional, but this really does offer a true simulation of the role. Progression isn’t incredibly tricky, but the draw provided by the game’s wealth of unlockables does encourage successful and accurate driving during your shift. Once you have enough coin in the bank, you can then expand your routes in the city, purchase and upgrade new buses and hire new staff to drive the additional routes. All of your actions are linked to your overall level at the end of the route with your success at each element of the role linked to how much you are subsequently paid. Sure, you can drive like a maniac, miss your stops and avoid taking payment, but you’re not going to make it far in your career if you do so. Handling the buses themselves is easy enough with the weighty vehicles providing enough challenge without ever feeling genuinely unwieldy, but with troublesome travellers, variable weather conditions, traffic and timing issues to take care of, there is always plenty to do at any given moment, and with success at every level of the role linked to your paid progression, all of your actions feel admirably consequential. The pace is invariably leisurely, but with so many minor challenges to keep your mind on, it never feels like a passive experience. Still, if you can get past the decidedly dated visuals, StillAlive Studios’ move from PC to console gaming brings with it plenty to like. The buses themselves look great and benefit from a huge amount of what I suspect to be very accurate internal details, but those details often serve to highlight the inconsistency of the game’s visual design. The still images don’t actually look that bad, but in motion, this is a dull, largely lifeless affair, one that, from an artistic perspective, could do with a lot more character (perhaps the bland visuals represent a genuine commitment to recreating the role), and from a technical perspective, one that suffers from horrendously wooden characters and poorly realised surroundings. There are minor issues throughout, but in terms of its core gameplay and structure, it’s a largely sound experience, one that is only soured by some genuinely budget visuals. It won’t be for everyone of course, but the solid challenge, engaging sense of progression, mostly decent handling and wry sense of humour combine to make this a wholly unique console gaming experience. But yeah, there is something about the unique pace and gentle challenge that make this an oddly compelling experience. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this at all, I mean, c’mon, it’s driving a bus for heaven’s sake. Who the hell wants to drive a virtual bus by the defined rules of the road? Well, me it turns out. Heck, if you want to be a……bus driver? Wait, who wants to be a bus driver? There is nothing wrong with it as a profession of course, but you might as well be playing Office Administration Simulator. Whether you want to be a fighter pilot, a space marine, an elf or a professional footballer, video games have you covered. Video games might be the finest form of escapism in modern society. Beating robots required feeding them paradoxes with dialogue choices. The most disappointing aspect of Pikuniku might be the “could have been.” When I demoed the beta version of Pikuniku back in 2017, the game felt more like what was promised in the trailers: political intrigue and covert operations wrapped in a playful bow of circles and cloud-shapes. While the co-op is challenging and fun, it suffers from the same issue as the solo campaign: I wanted more. To increase some of the time playing Pikuniku, the game adds 9 co-op levels for two players to solve puzzles with Piku and Niku respectively. However, if the game had offered more than the three-hour playtime, more secrets to explore than three map areas, and fleshed out other uses for currency and gear, it would have been a richer gaming experience. What’s there is fun and engaging, leaning into the ridiculous physics of Piku and his bouncy friends just enough to make traversing the world interesting and at times, hilarious. The linear story, coupled with the relatively short gameplay, does Pikuniku a disservice. While Pikuniku wants you to explore the world at large and enjoy all that it has to offer, earning trophies for completing side quests along the way, the reality is: there isn’t much to do outside of the linear main questline. I found myself wanting more of these small world-building additions but unfortunately, once the story kicked into high gear with boss battles, it lost much of the nonsensical nuance. I regret that Pikuniku didn’t lean into this mechanic more heavily, letting Piku be more of a menace than a robot kicking hero. Instead, Pikuniku expects its players to be trolls, kicking everything in sight - from an entire pottery store, to skulls, even to baby bird eggs - and it rewards this absurd behavior with trophies. Comedic dialogue carries the story and without it, Pikuniku would have been a much more tedious experience. Despite all the platformer elements, Pikuniku is much more of an adventure game that relies on the player being nosey. In fact, Pikuniku’s strength comes from simply being present in this ridiculous world. ( No, I meant to kick his feeble leg the other direction! ) Because of Pikuniku’s clean design, I didn’t come across any game-breaking bugs or graphical hitches on either the PC or the Switch. Boss battles are easy affairs, brought down only by trying to navigate the imprecise nature of Piku’s movement. The controls are just as basic, adding: a flimsy kick that you’ll use often to solve puzzles and irritate neighbors, an ability to roll into an oval for faster speeds, or a graceful swing from hooks with Piku’s ever-so-nimble legs. The music, punctuated by single notes, is charming in its playfulness, reminiscent of MIDI music from games three decades its senior. Geometric characters are sprinkled throughout a 2D world colored with a bright, bold palette found only in a kindergartener’s crayon box. Simplicity is the star of Pikuniku and I mean that in every sense of the word. Sounds easy, right? Well, actually, it is. As Piku, the red oval with legs hero of the story, it is up to you, to save the world from the evil Mr. Developed by SectorDub and published by Devolver Digital, Pikuniku is a colorful, straight-forward game that never takes itself too seriously. Pikuniku is a hilarious puzzle platformer that asks players, “Should I kick this?” And the answer is always yes.Ĭharming design, clever dialogue, and general aloofness set Pikuniku apart from other puzzle-platformer video games. If you’re looking for a minimal browser that uses the Qt Framework and the QtWebKit rendering engine, QupZilla might be exactly what you’re looking for. That last bit is important, especially when you switch from one desktop to another.įor those curious as to the requirements for Netsurf, the browser can run on a machine as slow as a 30Mhz ARM 6 computer with 16MB of RAM. To ease those rendering headaches, Netsurf does include HTTPS support, web page thumbnailing, URL completion, scale view, bookmarks, full-screen mode, keyboard shorts, and no particular GUI toolkit requirements. Netsurf uses its own layout and rendering engine (designed completely from scratch), which is rather hit and miss in its rendering ( Figure 2 ).įigure 2: Netsurf (mis)rendering the site.Īlthough you might find Netsurf to suffer from rendering issues on certain sites, understand the Hubbub HTML parser is following the work-in-progress HTML5 specification, so there will be issues popup now and then. GNOME Web is as clean and simple a web browser as you’ll find ( Figure 1 ).įigure 1: The GNOME Web browser displaying a minimal amount of preferences for the user.Ī web browser is more than an application: it is a way of thinking, a way of seeing the world. Target audience – Non-technical users are the primary target audience (which helps to define the types of features that are included). Minimal preferences – Preferences are only added when they make sense and after careful consideration. Human interface – Epiphany follows the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines. Software freedom – Epiphany will always be released under a license that respects freedom. Standards compliance – No non-standard features will ever be introduced to the codebase. Simplicity – Feature bloat and user interface clutter are considered evil. Epiphany development follows strict adherence to the following guidelines: Couple that rendering engine with the fact that Epiphany has very little in terms of bloat to get in the way, you will enjoy very fast page-rendering speeds. If you choose to install via the standard package manager, issue a command such as sudo apt-get install epiphany-browser -y for successful installation.Įpiphany uses the WebKit rendering engine, which is the same engine used in Apple’s Safari browser. (Note, however, that the recommended installation of Epiphany is via Flatpak or Snap). GNOME Web (codename Epiphany, which means “a usually sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something” ) is the default web browser for Elementary OS, but it can be installed from the standard repositories. I’ll be demonstrating these browsers on the Elementary OS platform, but each of these browsers are available to nearly every distribution in the known Linuxverse. Let’s take a look at five of the minimal browsers that can be installed on Linux. Regardless of the reason, Linux has you covered. Still others might be running low-powered machines that cannot handle the requirements of, say, Firefox or Chrome. For some, it’s about browser security, while others look at a web browser as a single-function tool (as opposed to a one-stop shop application). In fact, there are many reasons why you might prefer a minimal browser over a standard browser. There are those, however, who prefer using a web browser without all the frills. For some, these feature-rich browsers are perfect for everyday needs. Those options are full-fledged browsers with every possible bell and whistle you’ll ever need. You can use anything from open source favorites, such as Firefox and Chromium, or closed sourced industry darlings like Vivaldi and Chrome. From how you interact with the operating system (via a desktop interface), to how daemons run, to what tools you use, you have a multitude of options. One reason I often state up front is the almost unlimited number of choices to be found at almost every conceivable level. There are so many reasons to enjoy the Linux desktop. Belladonna’s been at the helm ever since, though Bush arguably had a similarly strong, if less prolific, run with the Big Four legends. Arguably the greatest triumphs of 2002s Irony Is a Dead Scene EP Pattons one and only release with the Dillinger Escape Plan, which sees him out-spaz that spazcore greats 'When Good Dogs Do Bad Things' finds the sneering, crooning, babbling, roaring vocalist serving up a masterclass in caustic character study. Dillinger Escape Plan When Good Dogs Do Bad Things (2002) We would be remiss not to recall the time when Patton joined this legendary math-metal outfit. But the group parted ways with Belladonna in 1992, replacing him with John Bush, whose similarly impressive range on songs like “Only” and “Black Lodge” helped push Anthrax onto the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart.Īfter that, both Belladonna and Bush were briefly in a tag-team match to take over vocals, with Dan Nelson taking over for a brief stint in the late ‘00s. 10:40 AM Back in the day when The Dillinger Escape Plan parted ways with their original singer Dimitri Minakakis - who only performed on the first DEP studio album, 1999's. This level of cynicism seems low for fans of Patton. It becomes a game of musical chairs after that, beginning with Turbin on the group’s 1984 full-length debut, Fistful of Metal. The Dillinger Escape Plan (with Mike Patton) - Irony is a Dead Scene (tangerine & black vinyl. Bungle, Fantomas) and The Dillinger Escape Plan, this four song EP is a wildly progressive amalgam. Thrash icons Anthrax have a habit of rotating vocalists, having cycled through nine different singers in their time, though only three of them appear on any of their studio albums: Neil Turbin, Joey Belladonna and John Bush.
